Travelling to Canada

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to or transiting through Canada by air.

U.S. citizens and travellers with a valid Canadian visa are exempt.

Applying for an eTA

  • You must apply for an eTA at least 72 hours before departure.
  • If you travel without an approved eTA, you may be denied entry upon arrival.
  • You must have a valid passport and travel with the same passport that you used for your eTA application.

Official eTA application:

Validity
An eTA is valid for up to 5 years, or until your passport expires – whichever comes first.

Your responsibility
It is always your responsibility to apply for and obtain an approved eTA before departure.
