Hidden disabilities

Air Greenland is a member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program and offers the sunflower lanyard to passengers with invisible disabilities. This initiative aims to make the travel experience safer and more inclusive for people with non-visible challenges such as ADHD, autism, anxiety, hearing loss or chronic pain.

What is the sunflower lanyard?

The sunflower lanyard is a green lanyard with a sunflower pattern that is worn visibly around the neck. It signals to Air Greenland staff that the wearer has an invisible disability and may need extra time, patience or support during the trip. It is a voluntary and discreet way to draw attention to special needs without having to explain yourself further.

Where can I get a sunflower lanyard?

Air Greenland offers free sunflower lanyards to passengers at the following airports in Greenland:

  • Nuuk
  • Ilulissat
  • Sisimiut
  • Narsarsuaq
  • Upernavik

At Copenhagen Airport, you can contact the airport staff to get a sunflower lanyard.

What can I expect as a carrier of the sunflower lanyard?

Air Greenland's check-in and cabin staff are trained to recognize the sunflower lanyard and understand its meaning. As a carrier, you can expect:

Extra time and patience during check-in and boarding.

  • Understanding the need for clear instructions and support along the way.
  • A more safe and inclusive travel experience.

It is important to note that the sunflower lanyard does not provide priority in queues or access to special facilities, but acts as a signal that you may need extra time, patience or assistance.

Why has Air Greenland joined the program?

In April 2024, Air Greenland became the first Greenlandic company to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. The initiative was officially launched on December 3, 2024, on the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The purpose is to promote inclusion and make it easier for people with invisible disabilities to travel safely and with dignity.
