Travel with animals

At Air Greenland, we understand that your pet is an important part of your family. That is why we offer the possibility of transporting pets on flights where this is possible, depending on capacity and the necessary permits.

Booking and Permits

  • Contact us well in advance – As there is limited capacity for transporting pets, we recommend that you submit your request as early as possible – preferably when making your booking – via this contact form or by calling our Call Centre at +299 70 12 12. We will then investigate whether transportation is possible on the requested flight. Once it has been confirmed that there is space, the pet's transportation will be added to your booking.
  • Obtain an import permit before travelling: If you are travelling to Greenland with a pet, you must apply for an import permit from the Greenland Representation in Copenhagen. Without a permit, the pet cannot be taken on the journey.
  • Download and complete an animal transport declaration: In addition to the import permit, you must also bring a completed animal transport declaration when checking in. You can download it here: Declaration for the Transport of Animals

Animals in the Cabin

  • Dogs and cats may be transported in the cabin. Other animals must be transported as checked baggage or as air freight.
  • The transport crate or bag must be waterproof and must not exceed 55 × 40 × 23 cm.
  • The animal may weigh a maximum of 8 kg, including the transport crate or bag.
  • Soft-sided transport bags are recommended, as they are easier to place under the seat.
  • The animal must remain in the crate or bag on the floor under the seat throughout the entire flight.
  • The animal must not inconvenience other passengers, including with regard to smell.
  • You may give the animal a sedative before travelling, if appropriate.
  • Air Greenland does not sell transport crates or bags for animals.

Animals in the Cargo Hold
The animal must be transported in an approved transport crate, cage, or container that meets the following criteria:

  • The transport crate must be strong, waterproof, clean, and disinfected.
  • The bottom must be covered with moisture-absorbing material, such as wood shavings or sawdust. Straw and hay are not permitted.
  • It must be designed so that the animal cannot escape, injure itself, or damage the aircraft's cargo.
  • It must be large enough for the animal to stand upright in a natural position, turn around, and lie down.
  • Wire mesh is not permitted.
  • You may give the animal a sedative before travelling, if appropriate.
  • Fish must be packed in a bag and placed in a polystyrene (Styrofoam) box.

Price & Payment
Payment is charged per kilogram, independently of your other checked baggage, and is calculated at the full excess baggage rate. This means that transporting a pet must be paid for separately, in addition to any baggage already included in your ticket.

Example:
As an Economy Class passenger, you can bring 20 kg of checked baggage and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 8 kg. These baggage allowances are already included in your ticket.

If you are travelling with an animal, you must pay separately for transporting the animal, including its transport crate or bag. This means that, for example, even if you only have 12 kg of checked baggage and no hand baggage, you must still pay separately for transporting the animal.

The price is determined according to the applicable excess baggage rate. The excess baggage fee is determined based on the specific route and can be obtained from the station you are departing from.

Payment for transporting pets is made at check-in. Unfortunately, it is not possible to pay for this online.

Please Note:
Pets cannot be transported on flights between Iceland and Greenland / Greenland and Iceland, or between Canada and Greenland / Greenland and Canada.

Please note that on flights operated by Jettime, the temperature in the cargo hold is approximately 0–1°C.
